Here’s a video sure to get your blood boiling. Matt Chancey is running for Public Service Commission in the state of Alabama, and he’s running on a pro-nuke anti-enviro platform. Watch this video and check out all the unkind things he has to say about you:
Most of my relatives live in Alabama, and I’m sure they will all vote for Matt and take great pleasure in telling me about it at the next wedding or funeral. So it goes. But as a general matter, social research suggests that if Alabama conservationists play their cards right, Matt’s accusations won’t do lasting damage to their reputation. Here are some tips:
Don’ts
Chancey has called you “radical.” Don’t deny it! The more you deny it, the more some voters will believe Chancey. You should response by saying “we exercise our freedom of speech to protect the health of Alabama families.”
Chancey has called you the “liberal elite.” That’s a charge that might stick, so watch yourself. It’s not a great time to throw around a bunch of elite vocabulary like “watershed,” “riparian,” “biodiversity,” etc… you’ll only prove his point if you do. (It’s never a great time to throw around elite vocabulary in front of everyday citizens)
Do
Post comments on Chancey’s YouTube video accusing him of being a shill for corporations that want to build dangerous and polluting nuclear power plants that threaten the health and safety of Alabama families (assuming you sincerely believe that to be the case, of course).
Point out that the corporations Chancey is shilling for are accountable to anonymous shareholders rather than local citizens.
Do point out that the responsible way for the state to help residents save money is by investing in conservation and clean, renewable energy, not by giving handouts to wealthy corporations.
Thanks to Katie at the Alabama Rivers Alliance for the great tip on this video.
1) It is always a good time to remember that you yourself are an “everyday citizen.”
2) Is Europe experiencing lots of pollution from all their nuclear reactors? I thought France, for example, is using lots of nuclear power? I think that defining even simple hot-button words, like “pollution,” will help define your position. What is being polluted by nuclear reactors, and how? In real terms, and using facts and figures that relate to “everyday citizens.”
Thanks for blogging about Mr. Chancey and his anti-environmental message!
Interestingly, Youtube comments have been disabled on his video. Maybe he doesn’t like free speech!
Alabama voters probably should be made aware that Matt Chancey opposes women’s suffrage on religious grounds.
Matt Chancey and his wife Jennie believe that it is a sin for women to vote, hold political office, attend college, or work outside the home. These views are expounded upon at great length on Jennie Chancey’s website, Ladies Against Feminism :
Matt Chancey is also on very intimate terms with Doug Phillips, the president and founder of VisionForum Ministries, a major homeschooling curriculum company. Phillips also preaches that God doesn’t allow women to vote or hold office:
http://www.visionforumministries.org/issues/family/biblical_patriarchy_and_the_do.aspx
Doug Phillips is described by Matt Chancey as being his dear friend and mentor ***(see poem below, written by Chancey and posted publicly on his blog, back when it WAS a public blog and not password protected), while Phillips in turn praises as his own intellectual hero one of the most virulent racists of the 19th century, Robert L. Dabney. Phillips is the author of the book, Robert Louis Dabney: The Prophet Speaks:

…and Matt is not above a bit of internet sleight of hand, when it will help his ends:

BUT, he IS a poet:
***Douggy Wuggie
By Matt Chancey in honor of Doug Phillips’ 40th Birthday. Posted on Chancey’s blog
May 31, 2005.
I’ve fought beside many men acrost the seas,
An’ some of ‘em was brave an’ some was not:
The Calvins, Dabneys an’ the Rushdoonys;
But Dougy was the finest o’ the lot.
‘e’s one o’ those good chaps without a chip,
‘e’ll smile atcha and squeeze yor ‘and instead,
But if you try to make the Gospel ‘ip,
‘e”ll forensically remove your bloomin’ ‘ead.
So ‘ere’s to you, Dougy Wuggy, at your ‘ome in Texas sand,
You’re a killer on the dais, and a first class fightin’ man;
I gives you your certificate, and sends your foes a runnin’,
Before you gives ‘em orthodox, epistemologic drummin’.
When I was green as algae on a frog,
My sanctifying was your special object,
You kept me from the evidential bog,
By presupposin’ God in every subject.
When ’scientists ‘ demand a special sign,
You prove the wisdom o’ the transcendentals,
You say ‘Six days is intelligent design,”
And “Framework’s only good for our credentials.”
So ‘ere’s to you, Dougy Wuggy, at your ‘ome in Texas sand,
You’re a dino-diggin ducky, and a first class fightin’ man;
I gives you your certificate, and gives your foes the heel,
I hopes yez finds your T-Rex, and gives ‘em for his meal.
I loves to read ‘is poetry,
‘Cause Dougy’s pen is witty,
It buries Ross’s heresy,
And shames pragmatic sissies.
And when ‘e dwells on prose instead of Byrons,
‘e cuts straight to the fundamental itchin’,’
˜is logic cries out like tornado sirens,
And ‘is foes flee from the ‘eat made in ‘is kitchen.
So ‘ere’s to you, Dougy Wuggy, at your ‘ome in Texas sand,
You’re a wonder wizard wordsmith, and a first class fightin’ man;
I gives you your certificate, and dares your foes to stand,
‘Cause you’ll play the cat a,’ banjo if they try to match your ‘and.
Dougy’s ‘ome is as peaceful as gardenias.
‘is wife, a loving partner, all can tell,
And if the state conscripts ‘is pretty ninas,
‘is sons will send Tyrannus straight to — well–.
Dougy wears the pants and spurns the chauffer,
‘is wrists are fused to not allow a limp,
The man who ‘e finds light within ‘is loafers,
Will run from them that follow Dougy’s bent.
So ‘ere’s to you, Dougy Wuggy, at your ‘ome in Texas sand,
You’re a marvel of testosterone, you first class fightin’ man!
I gives you your certificate, and dares your foes to stand,
Wearing foreign Frenchy fashions, while your shillelagh’s close at ‘and.
Our Dougy loves his Presbyter forbearers,
Even though to ‘im, most baptized to excess,
But when it comes to preachin’ against their errors,
‘is charity assures ‘im some success.
Dougy’s not an uptight theologian,
But ‘e contends with orthopraxy weak,
‘e shuns the spiritual vegetarian,
Preferring juicy Scripture for ‘is meat!
So ‘ere’s to you, Dougy Wuggy, at your ‘ome in Texas sand,
You’re a stubborn credo-Baptist, but a first class fightin’ man!
I gives you your certificate, and ‘opes your foes relent,
‘Cause if they don’t you’ll ‘ound ‘em till they “uncle” and repent.
I loves the way ‘e ‘onors common soldiers;
Dougy likes the vets as you will sees.
‘e walks around in khakis and fedoras,
Like Teddy with ‘is Panama fatigues.
Some claim ‘is politics too ‘ot and muggy,
To beat the leftist, egotistic germs,
But I say that I’ll take one Dougy Wuggy,
O’er fifty pragmatistic pachyderms!
So ‘ere’s to you, Dougy Wuggy, at your ‘ome in Texas sand,
Though you’ve n’er fired shot in anger, you’re a first class fightin’ man!
I gives you your certificate, and I gives you my right ‘and,
An’ I’ll fight beside your person, ’cause I’m your biggest fan!

GOP PSC CANDIDATES CALLED ON TO STOP SLINGING MUD AGAINST ENVIRONMENTALISTS
BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – In the battle for the Republican nomination for the presidency of the Public Service Commission, both run-off candidates are slinging mud at environmentalists.
Political newcomer Matt Chancey and former Chair of the Alabama Republican Party Twinkle Cavanaugh have both slammed environmentalists as “liberal extremists.” They also wrongly place the blame for America’s energy crisis at environmentalists’ feet.
“First of all, national polls show that more than 70 percent of Americans support environmental protection, where neither major party represents 70 percent of the people,” said Adam Snyder, executive director of Conservation Alabama. “Republicans, Democrats, and independents are environmentalists, and to label environmentalists as ‘liberal extremists’ is patently false.”
“Additionally, if either candidate has illusions that the environmental lobby in this country is more powerful than the utility and oil lobbies, then they do not know American politics. Our energy crisis is due to poor energy planning that has benefited the large utilities and oil companies in the short-term, while hurting our economy and environment in the long-term,” Snyder said.
“Conservation Alabama asks both candidates to stop misrepresenting the truth about environmentalists and focus their campaigns on how they will protect Alabama’s public health, economy, and environment as president of the Public Service Commission,” Snyder said.
Conservation Alabama will interview both the Republican and Democratic nominees for president of the PSC and expects to provide an endorsement in the race this fall.
Conservation Alabama is the state’s only full-time environmental lobby. Conservation Alabama’s mission is to make sound environmental policy – that protects citizens, the economy, and the environment – a political reality in Alabama.

I came here to make a comment referring to Adam’s statements above, but he beat me to it!
I thought he did a pretty good job.
