The myth about cypress mulch is that it won't rot and has an insect deterring quality. However, it has to be old growth age before the anti-rot/insect resin builds up to this point in the heartwood. And who can justify grinding up an old growth being to mulch a landscape shrub!?

How about these sign rewrites:

Save Our Cypress
Use pine straw mulch instead
OR
Save Our Cypress Trees
They hold our soil in place
OR
Cypress trees buffer hurricanes
Stop using cypress mulch!

Kelly-
Supposedly cypress mulch doesn't float away when it rains. This is the only advantage I have ever heard of. I think most people just don't know what they are buying.

I'm curious...why cypress? What makes it such a good mulch, as opposed to some of the 'non-native' species that are making themselves to home here? Is there some physical or chemical property of cypress that makes it a great mulch?
